How community became the foundation of Build My Idea

Build My Idea grew out of a community programme. Before there was a collective offering business services, there were young people learning discipline, leadership and how to develop an idea.

The early years

Community Visions Unlimited was founded in 2022 to support young people through structured development. In 2023, we started a programme inside a local mosque. It combined martial arts training with leadership sessions, business thinking and idea incubation.

The intention was to help people practise discipline, resilience and self-regulation before they faced the pressures of running a business. Mentoring was part of that environment from the start.

In 2024, we bought our own facility. Saturday sessions became full-time support, giving founders more regular access to mentors, shared services and one another. As the incubated businesses developed, we could see how their capabilities fitted together.

Four businesses, working as a collective

Build My Idea formed from that group. The businesses kept their individual expertise while working together on client projects:

• Community Visions Unlimited contributes business strategy, funding procurement and project management.
• InspiroArc contributes software development, automation and digital marketing.
• Hillowle Media contributes photography, videography, social media and sales.
• Titanium Business Solutions contributes branding and design.

For a client with several business needs, that combination means there is one team to work with. Decisions about the business case, technology and communication can be made together.

What mentoring contributes

A founder needs space to ask questions before a mistake becomes expensive. Mentoring gives them access to someone else’s experience and a way to examine the decisions they are making.

In our setting, that support happens alongside real work. Founders can discuss a client problem, ask another business for specialist help or get feedback on a plan. Sharing a facility made those conversations easier to have regularly.

Responsibility develops leadership

Leadership within BMI developed through taking responsibility for actual projects. People had to plan work, communicate with clients and follow through on commitments. The work gave them something concrete to review with a mentor.

Discipline, respect and self-improvement were explicit standards from the beginning. As the businesses grew, developing managers became more important: the habits of the people directing the work affect everyone around them.

A community needs practical support

Shared workspace, advice and access to other people’s skills can reduce some of the friction of starting a business. Community involvement also creates relationships beyond the immediate client project and gives the work a wider purpose.

The research linked below explores mentoring, incubators, shared values and leadership development in different settings. Those settings vary, so their results should be read in context. Our own experience is that regular contact and shared responsibility gave the businesses a stronger basis for working together.
